A letter
At one point in my life, I was a bipartisan activist for Iowa PIRG. While I lean pretty heavily to the left, my only concern during that time was this: get young people to vote. For the first time since then, I felt as though I needed to take action. When I saw this terrible video that Turn Right USA produced to speak against Janice Hahn, I was appalled. So appalled, in fact, that I stopped what I was doing and wrote an email. No, it’s not the most mind-blowing prose, and it doesn’t even bring up any novel points. It just felt good to say something.
To whom it may concern:
I’m fairly apathetic when it comes to political campaigns. I know what I believe, and what I would like to see in a politician, and am not persuaded by the propaganda and mud-slinging in which many candidates partake. In fact, the campaigns that are rude, out of line, or just plain mean paint the exact picture of what I don’t want to see in my political representative. I don’t want the schoolyard bully in charge of making decisions that affect our country. And just in case we didn’t all learn our lesson from the Back to the Future movies: everything goes to hell when the bully is in charge.
I see that you don’t represent any candidate. I see that you are trying to spread your beliefs with a YouTube video. I recognize your right to do so, but I don’t agree with the way you chose to act on that right. You aren’t spreading knowledge. You’re spreading hate, and that’s exactly what we don’t need if we ever want this country to be something better. With every hate-filled, ignorant video you propagate, you are destroying progress. You are destroying this country.
You are Biff Tannen.
Respectfully,
Valerie G
